Chatting To....Vicki Psarias May 2009: Workshops: May 2008
The second speaker in Club Flix’s agenda of talks, held in the ‘secret cinema’ in Bath, was the award wining writer and director Vicki Psarias, voted 4Talent filmmaker of the year 2007.
Within her talk Vicky discussed her student film making years, when she made her first award wining film ‘Rifts’ about two warring kebab shop owners divided by the fact that one is Greek-Cypriot, the other Turkish-Cypriot. They then go on to wage a price war with one another. After watching the film we heard from Vicki that whilst making this film she had had to blag a lot of the props and get sponsorship from various people in order to get the film made.
Her ability to get what she needs from people was also apparent in her vast CV of work experience and the big contacts list she had built up in the process – she urged the members of Club Flix to get out there and get work experience contacts of their own as much as possible.
The second of her films to be shown to Club Flix was ‘Broken’ a film based around the story of Vicki’s own mothers experiences on being an immigrant coming into the UK with her mother and brother to meet their father whom they had not seen for four years.
Vicki told us all about the history to the film, how she found the right actors and how the film was shot.
Then she gave us a quick glimpse of a film based around her father, which then went on to win awards – telling us that you don’t need to search far to find inspiration for a great film!
